This course, which meets the Spousal/Partner Abuse requirement for MFTs and LCSWs, offers a pragmatic as well as profound clinical approach to working with abusive behavior in intimate partner relationships.
By defining and making critical distinctions between domestic violence, abusive relationships, and anger management, by addressing the multiple causes of abusive behavior and motivations to stay in abusive relationships, and by challenging the terminology and gender assumptions associated with the topic, participants will have an opportunity to gain a contemporary and sophisticated understanding of intimate partner abuse as it occurs in the clients we serve.
Lecture, written exercises, discussion, videos, and role plays are used to address assessment, detection, and treatment of spousal/partner abuse and domestic violence. Topics covered include the influence or race, gender, and sexual orientation, the effects of domestic violence on children, the role of substance abuse, countertransference, and specific treatment strategies.
